Luke walked into his house fifteen minutes after Rachel. Despite repeated knocks on her closed bedroom door, he got no response. Finally, though very worried about the aftereffects of her run-in with Donaldson, he gave up and trudged back to the kitchen. Taking a cold beer from the fridge, his gaze fell on the Next Day UPS package that he’d brought in from the front porch and which now lay on the counter. It was addressed to him. He checked the return address and smiled.

Taking a step toward the guest bedroom, he stopped. Instinctively, he knew Rachel needed this time to herself. He replaced the package on the counter, then began rummaging through the fridge for the makings of supper, but he couldn’t take his mind off the woman behind that bedroom door.

He didn’t have to be a nuclear physicist to know what was going through Rachel’s mind. He should have ripped out Donaldson’s tongue then broken every bone in his body when he had the chance. Luke couldn’t remember the last time he’d actually seen that particular shade of bloodred. It was a good thing Rachel had headed him off or he’d have smeared Donaldson’s cocky, insensitive face all over the floor.

Rachel had been the best mom any kid could ask for. That anyone would even hint that she was abusive was worse than ludicrous. It was insane and insulting. But to confront her, a woman who had lost her child to a deranged arsonist and in front of the task force—

A sudden cold wetness on his leg drew Luke from his raging thoughts. He looked down to discover he’d squeezed the tomato he’d just taken from the crisper until it had popped, spewing seeds, pulp and juice all over his pant leg, the floor and the refrigerator.

Throwing out a long string of expletives, he cleaned up the mess, washed his hands, then dropped into a chair and sipped his beer while he waited for his rage to abate.
